“Not at all. I didn’t know you were my fated mate until I saw you again. You can ask my family; I’ve loved you and missed you every day since I lost you. This is just an added layer, pulling me toward you at all times. You’ll feel it too, the more time we spend together.”

I believed him. There was no way his feelings had been fake when we were young. We’d been inseparable every summer as long as I could remember.

His large hands enveloped mine as we sat in silence and I absorbed his words. He thought we were fated to be together. “What will happen if I say I don’t want to be your fated mate?”

I wanted to be his mate. Duh. I was still reeling from finding him again and wanted to take it very slow, but I already felt the pull he’d mentioned.

“I know I’d never be able to be with another woman,” he said. “I’m not sure what happens to a human. I’ve read of very few instances of it happening. Usually fated mates are separated because one of them dies, but the accounts in our histories just give the dragon’s side of it, and generally, the dragon never finds another mate.”

No. Mate. No other.

Gaping at Maverick, I tried to see in his eyes if anything looked different. I’d heard his dragon. He sounded animalistic, which made sense, I guessed. It was hard to imagine they were the same, though. Like there’d be a third person in our bed—if and when we got there. “I heard that,” I whispered.

Maverick grinned. “I knew it. I just told him he needed to be quiet. I’m afraid he’ll freak you out.”

“I’ve moved past the freak-out state.”

After I’d seen him shift, I hadn’t talked to him for a couple of days as I processed it all. He came and met with Maddox, but I’d kept to myself. Then I used my internet skills and dove into the internet. Everything I found was related to some fiction or another, whether in print or on film.

Eventually, I’d ventured onto the dark web. I didn’t like going there. Too much corruption there. I’d come across things on the dark web I’d never forget, like once several years ago, a range of auctions of actual people. That was one I never was able to get out of my head. I’d reported it to the FBI and all they’d done was thank me for my tip.

There had been a little bit of info on the dark web, but I hadn’t been able to hack into those servers. What information I’d gotten made me believe that I wasn’t alone in being shocked at the presence of paranormal creatures on Earth.

I was in a shakily accepting place now. I believed it all existed, but it still felt surreal, like I’d wake from the dream any day.

“Can anyone become a dragon?” I asked. He blinked at my change of questioning.

“No. Shifters can only be born. If a dragon bit a human, it would be like any other large animal predator biting a human.
